Subject: ‘Doubt is our product’
Dear William,
(I’ll forward this email to the members of both the Science and Technology Committee and the Health and Social Care Committee.)
Beginning where I left off in my last email: Dr Frank Adlkofer: ‘‘The mobile phone industry has taken over some methods used by the cigarette industry in the US for many, many years, to hide the truth.”
In 1969, an internal memo within the Brown and Williamson Tobacco company was discovered by outside investigators. The memo read: ‘Doubt is our product since it is the best means of competing with the body of fact that exists in the mind of the general public. It is also a means of establishing controversy.‘
When growing evidence of a link between smoking and lung cancer emerged, the industry, unable to refute this evidence, strategically created ‘doubt’… and for many years, the manufacturing of this doubt went hand in glove with the manufacturing of the cigarettes. A PhD represents an academic standard but not necessarily an integrity standard. There will always be scientists who are prepared to sell their scientific souls if either the financial rewards are high enough or they’re in desperate enough need of a job. These are the scientists who, like scientific mercenaries, are employed to carry out the misrepresentative research which needs only to be convincing enough to suspend the facts, create doubt and buy time. An industry may know that its product is harming and even killing people, but rides on the latency period until such time as it no longer holds out and symptoms start appearing. If punitive fines are eventually imposed for such a despicable act, they’ll only be petty cash compared to the vast profits made on the borrowed time afforded by unwitting fellow humans. What’s to lose, except lives?
From the notes of the Science and Technology Committee meeting, Thursday 6th June 2019, Question 52:
Chair (Stephen Metcalfe): ”… A number of bits of correspondence have been sent to us individually—I have certainly had them—and to the Committee generally raising health concerns around 5G. Is there sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the roll-out does not present a public health risk?”
Prof. Dame Sally Davies: ”Yes, I think there is at this time. …”
‘PHE considers the balance of evidence has not changed materially since the Advisory Group on Non-ionising Radiation (AGNIR) reached its conclusions and it is not necessary for the UK to initiate another comprehensive evidence review at this time. … Among the recent comprehensive evidence reviews is a 2015 review prepared for the European Commission by the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR), which reached conclusions broadly in line with those of AGNIR.‘
So here we find ourselves in the ‘doubt is our product’ territory with government advisory bodies and the telecommunications industry on one side and independent scientific research with no vested interest on the other:
Dr Sarah Starkey, signatory of The EMF Appeal, the 5G Appeal, The EMF Call: ‘Accurate information about the safety of wireless technologies cannot be disseminated or accessed whilst the scientists responsible in the DH, PHE or its advisory bodies produce, promote and base advice on inaccurate and factually incorrect information. Conflicts of interest associated with membership of ICNIRP need to be addressed. Current advice is not evidence based and the public have been let down by misinformation and a lack of precautionary actions. … The scientists responsible for the inaccurate AGNIR report who are employed by PHE or the Department of Health (DH) continue in their roles and still advise on the safety of wireless signals. In my view, the evidence points to these employees having broken their employment Code of Conduct 187 and they should be removed from their roles.’
Dr Martin Pall, signatory of The EMF Appeal, the 5G Appeal, The EMF Call, from ‘5G: GREAT RISK FOR EU, U.S. AND INTERNATIONAL HEALTH’ : ‘What is clear is that SCENIHR is wittingly or unwittingly serving as a propagandist for the industry and in that process, SCENIHR has no difficulty in putting forth seven devious, individually important falsehoods.’
Below is a list of the 240 signatories of the Scientists’ 5G Appeal to the EU, whose scientific expertise is not in parity with Prof. Dame Sally Davies’s, and who state: ‘Scientists and doctors warn of potential serious health effects of 5G‘. Approximately a third of the signatories are professors:
